“A whole lot of real estate and very few riders” best describes the “Wild West End” - a vast area in Western Colorado extending from Norwood to Nucla and Naturita to Gateway. Because of this, COPMOBA has taken a unique approach to trail development and advocacy in this area. We have enjoyed a long-working relationship with the nonprofit recreation organization, Montrose West Recreation (MWR), since the designation of the 118-mile long Paradox Trail in 1995. The West End Trails Alliance (WETA) was formed to represent all cyclists from the West End. This tri-county group works to develop and promote riding opportunities within this area. Paul Koski of Nucla, founder of the Paradox Trail, has been the West End’s voice and representative to the COPMOBA Board of Directors for over 20 years.  Visit us at westendtrails.org for more information on our trails.

Over 70% of the West End is public lands (both BLM and USFS). Historically, this region has seen traditional uses such as mineral extraction (uranium, copper and coal), cattle grazing, ranching and big game hunting. Recreational use such as mountain biking is a recent development and quickly gaining a foothold in the larger economic mix within the small isolated communities of the West End. Identifying, mapping and promoting EXISTING two-track trails is our main goal at the moment. Working with land agencies, we hope to have these popular routes signed in the future for the benefit of area visitors and locals.
WETA has partnered with the BLM for planned trail development in the Burn Canyon Area just west of Norwood, while the USFS has just completed over 17 miles of new singletrack trail within the Thunder Road Area above Naturita Canyon. The long-awaited Paradox Trail Reroute project will create over four miles of new singletrack while bringing this long distant trail within a quarter of a mile to the Town of Nucla. The potential for future stack loop systems east and north of Nucla are great.
Check out our Facebook page- Paradox Trail and West End Rides- for up-to-date information. WETA meets once a month in various locations around the West End. Email us at: westend@copmoba.org or visit us online at westendtrails.org and Paradoxtrail.org.
